IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS ABOUT THE PARANÁ RIVER
The purpose of this page is to communicate our developed activities; or still under development.
The Paraná River is the largest river in South America after the Amazon River, with 4,880 km in length and occupying the territory of three countries: Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Due to its location in an area that has suffered from anthropic activity for more than two centuries, the river was and continues to be seen solely and exclusively as a source of resource exploration activity. Even today living in one of the worst environmental moments, every analysis made about the situation of the river is given a lot by the economic and productivist perspective.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPORTANCE
In addition to an abundant ichthyofauna in the remaining natural course sites, the river is also in a transition zone of biomes, with aspects such as floodplains (flooded areas such as swampland) Atlantic forest in the interior (seasonal semideciduous forest) and also cerrado. Some species were almost extinct in the region, such as piracanjuba (south american salmon), marsh deer and black lion tamarin (endemic to the state of São Paulo).
HOW DID THE NGO BEGIN?
In 2019, a major fire hit Ilha Comprida in the region of Castilho (SP) and Três Lagoas (MS), burning 90% of the vegetation. Since then, no measures or public policies have been taken to recover the forest in that area. What can be noticed is that the region and the Paraná River as a whole are on the periphery of environmentalism with few initiatives and from this one to environmental issues in the region.
There are also no study materials on the river from an environmental point of view, even in the universities around it, scientific production is more focused on agricultural productivity. There is no Paraná River Day, schools do not see or promote river education and there is not enough content given the importance of the Paraná River. Therefore, the NGO appears in 2020 with the objective not only of increasing visibility on the issues of Ilha Comprida, but on the Paraná River as a whole.
ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORY
In addition to the construction of hydroelectric plants during the military period that caused flooding of areas not even studied, the construction of the Itaipu plant caused the disappearance of one of the largest waterfalls in the world (Sete Quedas).
Today, the river region suffers extreme human interference caused by the advance of industrialization (cellulose and thermoelectric plants), livestock and agriculture. In 1997, the Ilha Grande National Park was created on one of the few stretches of the river that have not yet been dammed.
HOW DOES THE NGO WORK?
The NGO operates on three pillars: education, inspection and recovery
EDUCATION
Generate knowledge about the importance of the river as a bioindicator, whether through stimulating research in universities, working together with the press, municipal schools with early childhood education activities, educational activities with riverside communities.
OVERSIGHT
Participation in initiatives aimed at curbing river pollution and promoting the regeneration of biomes, such as reforestation of areas, sustainable sanitation initiatives, agroforestry.
RECOVERY
Working in partnership with agencies at all levels, the environmental police, the Public Ministry and environmental secretariats, in addition to Ibama and Icmbio. Contact with politicians on the environmental agenda to develop specific recovery and protection laws.
